What Can Acupuncture treat?

This is a question I get asked often. Can it help with this or that condition? What can Acupuncture treat? In a nutshell Acupuncture is for the treatment of people, so it can assist almost every type of health complaint. How is this possible?

Well like all natural medicine it works by stimulating the body’s own ability to heal. It really is not more complicated than that, but some choose to make it seem far more complex. Hard core science fanatics want a more definitive explanation…

Fine! I always answer this question by stating that it works by affecting the body’s electromagnetic fields. They are usually ok with that and that is one part of how Acupuncture actually works. If you don’t understand that then it is ok, it is not that important unless you are a hard core scientist…

Many patients come for the treatment of physical conditions like damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments ect… but many also come for emotional disorders like anxiety, depression or insomnia.

Acupuncture has the benefit on not only being an evidence based medicine, but the focus is on the whole body. If I am treating a patient with a shoulder complaint, I still need to know about sleep, stomach and bowels, stress, headaches ect… this is because we treat PEOPLE not DISEASE (which we call patterns of disharmony).

People often try many other forms of treatment first, and finally when nothing is left they think ‘what the hell I might as well give Chinese medicine a try’, which is how I found it all those years ago. This means we get many difficult cases that other practitioners could not help with. We can often get results for these patients because of the way we think, and the way we are trained. We are trained to read the bodies signs and treat accordingly.

Remember that Chinese medicine and Acupuncture is not based on science; it predates modern Chemistry and Biology by many thousands of years. If a treatment therapy has been around for thousands of years does that not indicate that it might be effective? After all people are not stupid and will not continually use a therapy that does not work.

Acupuncture has a cumulative effect on the body, the more often you have it the better your results will be. Much like nutrition or exercise you use it to keep the body healthy even if you have no specific health complaint. Some patients come in weekly or even twice weekly, which others I only see every 4-6 weeks. It all depends on the condition treated.

Remember the old saying ‘prevention is better than cure’. Many patients wait until they are really unwell (males in particular) before they will seek help. Females tend to be more in-tune with their bodies and seek help before they are in serious trouble. The idea is you have treatment when you are feeling well to help promote wellness, and not wait until you are really sick. Do you just eat healthy food when you are sick? Or do you eat healthy food when you feel good to promote that? Acupuncture follows the same principles.

Diagnosis is made by listening, asking questions and reading a patients tongue and pulse signs. Treatment is done by needling, using herbs, Gua Sha (scraping), cupping or any combination of these as well as nutritional advice.

So if you have ever been curious about Chinese medicine now is the perfect time to come find out what it is all about. Questions welcome and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Warm regards,

Ben
